Presentation
The Institute of Geography and Sustainability (IGD) is seeking to recruit a senior SNF researcher for the Academic Observatory for Cycling and Active Mobilities (OUVEMA).
OUVEMA was created in 2020. It is an interdisciplinary research platform on cycling and active mobilities. Its areas of research are: 1) practices and behaviour; 2) policies; 3) planning and the built environment; 4) health. While its research is promoted internationally, OUVEMA also maintains close links with actors in the field by organising lecture series and conducting action research. Its Scientific Advisory Board comprises 18 research professors from 5 UNIL faculties.
The IGD has around 130 members working in the fields of geography and sustainability, combining humanities and natural sciences. The IGD offers an international, interdisciplinary environment that is stimulating and conducive to high-level research.
Job information
Expected start date in position : 01.06.2025 or to be agreed
Contract length : 2 years, renewable 2 years, maximum 4 years
Activity rate : 50%-80% (to be agreed upon)

Your responsibilities
You will be involved in OUVEMA's activities and development, and in particular in research projects on the users' experience of cyclists and pedestrians in relation to the transformation of the built environment and infrastructure in a perspective of sustainability.
You will be involved in the project ‘Infrastructural Baukultur: Co-Design Methodologies for the Transformation of Swiss Cantonal Roads into Passage-Paysages’, which will be conducted with the ALICE laboratory (EPFL) as part of NRP 81 (Baukultur).
You will be responsible for:
- Conducting a literature review on the links between the built environment and the experience of cyclists and pedestrians
- Participating in the definition of the interventions on road redevelopment projects
- Designing, carrying out and analysing surveys (interviews, intercept surveys, etc.) of active mobility users before and after interventions
- Publishing the results in international journals
- Communicating the results to stakeholders.
Depending on your workload (50-80%), you will be involved in other OUVEMA projects and activities related to cycling practices and planning.
Your qualifications
- Doctorate in geography, sociology (or another social science) or planning
- Experience in academic research in the field of mobility
- Interest in urban planning and urban design
- Skills in questionnaire surveys and interviews (design and analysis)
- Experience in conducting and analysing interviews
- Ability to take initiatives and work independently and as part of a team
- Interest in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches
- Excellent knowledge of French and English.
