PhD Position: Intermolecular forces in confined nanopores
Published 14 February 2025 Workplace Basel, North West Switzerland, Switzerland CategoryLife Sciences
Starting immediately or upon agreement
How does life emerge from molecules and cells? This is the central question that motivates us. With curiosity and passion, we investigate the entire spectrum ranging from the atom to the organism. The Biozentrum of the University of Basel is one of the world’s leading life sciences institutes. With 32 groups, high-end core facilities and 500 employees, we are a dynamic and international research community that has spawned many fundamental discoveries in biology and medicine as well as several Nobel Laureates. Become part of our community!
Skilled and motivated individuals are encouraged to apply for a 4-year PhD project in the research group of Roderick Lim at the Biozentrum, University of Basel, Switzerland.
The Lim Lab is interested in understanding how biological nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) regulate selective transport processes and how this functionality can be leveraged in the design of bio-inspired artificial nanopores. In this project, we want to apply high-speed atomic force microscopy (HS-AFM), and other super-resolution microscopies, to resolve the intermolecular forces at play within NPCs and artificial "NPC-like" nanopores.
Your position
Besides basic research, PhD candidates will also have to contribute to undergraduate level teaching.
Your profile
Interested candidates should have a background in experimental physics, biophysics, nanoscience, physical chemistry, materials science or related disciplines. Strong candidates will have experience in AFM, and/or HS-AFM. Familiarity with Jacob Israelachvili’s classic textbook "Intermolecular and Surface Forces" is a plus. The ideal candidate should be highly interactive and capable of independent research in a team environment. A solid command of oral and written English is essential.
We offer you
We are a multi-national, interdisciplinary lab that combines biophysical, molecular and cellular approaches to investigate intriguing biological problems. The successful applicant will benefit from a highly stimulating, collaborative research environment as well as state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities at the new Biozentrum research tower.
Basel is an international city with people from 150 nations. Located on the border where three countries meet - Switzerland- Germany-France - it is Europe’s most important life sciences hub. Basel provides a high standard of living and a rich and varied cultural atmosphere.
