The International Hockey Federation (FIH) is the global governing body for hockey, recognized as an Olympic sport since 1908. Responsible for overseeing the sport’s rules and regulations, managing world rankings, and developing hockey worldwide, FIH organises major international events, including the FIH World Cup and the FIH Pro League.
Founded in 1924, FIH's mission is to promote and develop the sport of hockey at all levels, from grassroots to elite competition, and to foster inclusivity and gender equality in partnership with 146 national associations and 5 continental federations.
Job Summary
FIH seeks a Director General to provide strategic, operational and financial leadership, under the guidance of the FIH President and the Executive Board. The role demands a professional with extensive experience in sports federation management and the emotional intelligence required to manage complex, multicultural stakeholder relationships.
The Director General will report directly to the President and the Executive Board and work in close collaboration with the Chairpersons of the relevant FIH Committees and Panels.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Execution and Governance:
- Collaborate with the President and Executive Board to translate strategic plans into actionable outcomes, ensuring operational alignment with FIH’s objectives.
- Provide informed advice and support to the President and Executive Board, guaranteeing effective governance practices.
- Ensure a good interaction and cooperation with national associations (NAs) and continental federations (CFs).
- Prepare for and participate in Congress, Executive Board, and various committees and panels meetings.
2. Organisational Leadership:
- Lead the management team to foster a culture of excellence, integrity and accountability.
- Ensure smooth execution and delivery of FIH events, maintaining the highest standards of professionalism.
- Oversee revenue generation and execution of contracts through partnerships, sponsorships, media rights, and broadcasting agreements.
- Supervise financial and risk management to ensure solid financial planning and sustainability.
3. Stakeholder Engagement:
- Develop strong relationships with national associations, continental federations, international bodies, athletes, sponsors, media partners, and other stakeholders.
- Upon request, represent FIH at international conferences, competitions, and meetings, effectively communicating the federation’s values and objectives.
- Ensure all FIH activities adhere to the highest standards of ethical conduct, transparency, and governance best practices.
Qualifications
- Experience: Extensive leadership experience (minimum 10-15 years) in sports administration or a closely related field, with a proven track record in strategic oversight, organisational management, and team leadership across diverse cultures and environments.
- Skills: Deep knowledge of international sports governance, regulations, and operations; exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with proficiency in English; strategic and analytical thinking capabilities with expertise in financial and operational planning and decision-making.
- Education: Graduate degree in Business Administration, Sports Management, or a related discipline.
- Travel: Willingness and ability to travel internationally and work flexible hours to adapt to various time zones.
Note: Knowledge and experience in hockey would be beneficial for the position.
