Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.
Scientific Knowledge Broker 60%-80%
The Sandec Department (Sanitation, Water and Solid Waste for Development) at Eawag is currently looking to fill the position for a knowledge broker, bridging the science-policy gap.
We are looking for a highly motivated and qualified individual to enhance the translation, distillation, dissemination and the uptake of Eawag-Sandec’s main research findings for the WaSH sector through professional knowledge brokerage and targeted towards development practitioners and the main Swiss development actors.
Responsibilities
- Support the synthesis of main research findings of Eawag and translate them into action-oriented outputs for the non-academic community using a variety of formats (policy briefs, talking papers, webinars).
- Strengthen, facilitate and mediate practitioner exchange and discussion (expert panels, seminars, conference events (e.g. at Stockholm World Water Week, regional meetings, SDC internal information exchange platforms) to facilitate outreach but also capture needs of practitioners.
- Support the integration of the scientific community conducting research on WASH, the different Swiss WASH stakeholders and the SDC/SECO community (RésEau, Swiss Water Partnership, Aguasan, Swiss Water and Sanitation Consortium etc.) and other development partners by establishing and facilitating mechanisms and platforms for exchange and promote the process of information exchange, knowledge brokerage and selected backstopping to key SDC/SECO programmes.
- Support the policy dialogue on innovation and state-of-the-art in water management (including groundwater), sanitation and solid waste in selected countries, as appropriate and per expressed need. This will necessitate the involvement of a wide range of other stakeholders, including representatives from governments, SDC cooperation offices as well as local universities/research centres.
- Reporting on Knowledge brokerage activities.
Requirements
- A graduate degree (MSc) in relevant thematic areas
- Good sector knowledge with at least 5 years of experience in applied research and knowledge brokerage with development partners
- Experience in low- and middle-income countries
- Excellent communicator and service-oriented person with proven experience in setting up and executing knowledge management concepts as well as building, maintaining and sustaining communities
- Established network and contacts to sector experts/development practitioners
- Excellent English, good command of French and/or German is desirable.

Earliest starting date is 1 April 2025. The position is limited to two years with the possibility of extension.
