Company Description
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Job Description
Introduction
Are you passionate about hands-on engineering and eager to work in a high-tech, precision-driven environment? As a Mechanical technician, you will be at the heart of the mechanical construction of beam transfer systems across the accelerator complex, contributing to some of the most advanced scientific projects in the world.
Working primarily in an ultra-clean environment, you will collaborate with a diverse team to assemble and install magnets, infrastructure, Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) components, and other essential injection and extraction equipment.
You will be working in the Kicker Design and Construction section of the Accelerator Beam Transfer Group , covering several subdomains of mechanical and electrical engineering and joining a multidisciplinary team of experts.
You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY) which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators. The SY teams design, build and operate equipment systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward-looking R&D programmes.
Functions
In close collaboration with the experts of the Group, you will:
- Take responsibility for all phases of the construction process for magnets operating under vacuum, including reviewing technical drawings, procuring and preparing components, defining tools, assembling, conducting vacuum tests, and documenting processes;
- Participate actively in upgrade studies and the consolidation of equipment to enhance performance and reliability;
- Participate in fault-finding and elaborating repair solutions, including the machining of mechanical components;
- Support clean room operations, gradually taking on a key role after an initial learning period where you will gain in-depth knowledge of the equipment and methodologies;
- Collaborate with engineers and technicians to produce high-quality magnet assemblies that meet UHV standards;
- Take responsibility for the installation and alignment of mechanical equipment across the entire accelerator complex.
Qualifications
Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanics or a related field.
Experience:
- Proven experience in mechanical assemblies of complex systems;
- Demonstrated experience in reading and understanding ISO-GPS dimensioning;
- Experience with the Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) components and standards;
- Demonstrated experience in traditional (non-CNC) machine-tools: milling and turning;
- Initial experience in planning and coordinating the fabrication and assembly of mechanical systems.
Technical competencies:
- Knowledge and application of clean-room techniques;
- Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment, incl. knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation;
- Knowledge and use of standard vacuum components and piping;
- Knowledge and application of leak detection techniques and equipment;
- Knowledge and application of materials, surface and thermal treatments for UHV.
Behavioural competencies:
- Working in teams: cooperating constructively with others in the pursuit of team goals; balancing personal goals with team goals.
- Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
- Demonstrating accountability: taking responsibility for own actions and decisions.
- Achieving results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
- Communicating effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented.
Language skills:
Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.
