The position is available from April 2025 earliest and offered for 3.5 years (renewable to max. 4 years)
We invite applications for a PhD position in the field of Atmospheric Sciences at the Institute of Geography and Oeschger Centre , University of Bern. The project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, aims to advance the understanding and prediction of extreme storms and their associated impacts in Europe and the North Atlantic on sub-seasonal to seasonal “timescales - spanning” from two weeks to two months. The goal of the PhD project is to provide valuable insights on the predictability of extreme storm impacts in present and future climate. The candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Hilla Afargan-Gerstman.
Tasks
The PhD candidate will identify atmospheric precursors that influence extreme winter storms in Europe and the North Atlantic on sub-seasonal to seasonal timescales, using climate model simulations ranging from an idealized to complex configuration. The insights gained from these simulations will improve our understanding of the predictability and risks associated with extreme storms in present and future climates. The project will involve analyzing climate data from observations and models, as well as applying statistical and/or machine learning methods.
Requirements
- MSc in atmospheric sciences, climate science, environmental science, physics, applied mathematics, or a related field.
- Some experience with programming (e.g., Python) is an advantage
