The University of Bern is a partner in four Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence (CoRE): CoRE-Genomics for Health in Africa, CoRE-Advanced Infectious Diseases Research and Training, and CoRE-Non-communicable Disease. In wishing to consolidate its engagement in this exciting venture, the University of Bern seeks to appoint an experienced Scientific Officer based at the Multidisciplinary Center for Infectious Diseases of the University of Bern. This position shall support strategic coordination and activities management for the CoREs listed above. This is a new and exciting position featuring a diverse combination of skillsets in scientific and educational project management, consortium coordination, fundraising and community building across multiple international partners. The successful applicant shall join a team of highly driven academic and non-academic collaborators in Africa and Europe.

Requirements
Essential requirements
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience of working in public or private sector research funding management
- Significant experience with coordination of consortia-based scientific initiatives.
- A significant track record in grant writing and fundraising
- Knowledge of science, innovation and programme design and planning
- Proven experience in successfully developing, leading, and supervising complex initiatives involving high performing teams
- Proven experience in building relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, networking, partnership building and relationship management
- Fluency in English, working knowledge of French and German
Desirable assets
- Doctoral-level degree, such as a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) in a relevant scientific or biomedical field or related fields of science and innovation expertise
- A track record of scientific research in the life and biomedical sciences
- Knowledge of current international, national and pan-African issues in biomedical research priorities
- Experience in developing and managing scientific grant programmes and grant making practices
- Proven experience in facilitating technical and strategic design processes and developing workflow processes and tools to support research platforms and initiatives
- Experience with PR and communication

We offer the possibility for flexibility in working hours and are open to hybrid models for in-person and home-office (max. 50%) employment. Travel (national and international) of limited duration is envisaged. Centrally located office space in Bern, the highly attractive medium-sized federal Capital of Switzerland.
