ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
Area of specialisation: Science and Technology Studies (STS) Full-time position: 100%
Profile
- PhD in social sciences or equivalent qualification;
- Academic teaching experience in the field of STS / Science Studies;
- Ability to address an audience of engineers as well as social scientists;
- Proven research record in the field of STS in the broad sense, regardless of the area of specialisation;
- Excellent links with national and international networks in the field of STS;
- Ability to attract external funding;
- Ability to teach in French and English.
Teaching (45%)
Six hours a week of teaching throughout the year, including:
- In the College of Humanities (CDH) at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL):
o Two BA-level half-year classes (1 hour/year, 28 hours, 2 ECTS credits each);
o One MA-level full-year class (2 hour/year, 56 hours, 6 ECTS credits).
- In the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Lausanne (UNIL):
o A BA (second part) or MA class for students in various departments in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, addressing the issue of expertise and scientific controversies based in the candidate’s area of specialisation (2 hours/year, 56 hours, 6 ECTS credits).
Supervision of Master’s dissertations and PhD theses.
The teaching delivered at EPFL must form a coherent whole for the study of STS. One of the classes may be delivered in English.
A release from two hours’ weekly teaching / year will be granted during any pre-tenure period. Faculty of Social and Political Sciences

Research (45%)
The post-holder will pursue their own research in the field of STS in the broad sense, specialising in an area of their choice. Management and psychology are already well represented in the CDH and are not considered a priority for this recruitment.
The post-holder will conduct their research in collaboration with members of the Institute of Social Sciences and with colleagues from the Social and Human Sciences programme at EPFL. They will be expected to produce international-level academic research publications.
It is expected that the post-holder will be affiliated to the Science and Technologies Laboratory (STS Lab) of the Institute of Social Sciences and will collaborate with its members on joint projects. Collaboration with other UNIL and EPFL research centres is also encouraged.
They will also seek external funding, in particular from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
Administrative responsibilities (10%)
In accordance with statutory requirements and in the name of collegiality, the post-holder will take on any administrative tasks that may be assigned to them by the STS Lab, the Institute, Faculty, University or (inter-)university decision-making bodies.

The post is located in the Institute of Social Sciences (ISS) and the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (SPS).
