Job Description Summary
The Staff Engineer – Preliminary Mechanical Design leads multiple aspects of early engine design for GE aerospace’s next generation of engines. This role will focus on the support of advanced commercial programs in their early phases of design. The Staff Engineer will create new engine layouts for innovative concepts which balance weight, cost, and reliability. They will own the design and integration of advanced commercial engines and explore the impacts of new technologies. They will lead multi-functional and global teams to find optimal systems-level solutions to new challenges.
Job Description
Essential Responsibilities
In the role of Staff Engineer – Preliminary Mechanical Design, you will design and integrate engine modules and full engines that meet the needs of advanced programs, manage complex issues within functional area(s) of expertise, be involved in long-term planning, and contribute to the overall business strategy.
Additionally, in the role of Staff Engineer – Preliminary Mechanical Design, your responsibilities will include:
- Lead a technical team to design the next generation of commercial aircraft engines
- Act as mechanical integrator for the engine, combining input from multiple disciplines to construct a clean-sheet design
- Lead trade studies to explore design options and evaluate the impact of new technologies
- Coordinate the efforts of a global and multi-disciplinary team
- Create and execute new technical solutions for challenges faced by the next generation of commercial engines.
- Perform the cross-section development for preliminary mechanical design of new engines including evaluations for mechanical feasibility, weight, and technology assessments to support successful execution of program deliverables.
- Identify new inventions and participate in actions such as patent creation to protect intellectual property.
- Execute with guidance the analysis of assigned projects that meet business standards, practices and procedures and the product & program requirements.
- Work with focals across GE Aerospace to shape design, weight, cost, and maintenance strategy for the next generation of commercial engines.
- Formulate and implement plans to achieve technical requirements, schedules, and contract commitments.
- Lead small teams through the planning and preliminary design of modules and systems.
- Coordinate with a broad team including our business partners and GE Aerospace sites across the globe.
- Improve GE Aerospace’s design capabilities.
- Develop new design tools and processes for the preliminary design organization to address new technologies or increase fidelity.
- Lead or participate in organizational efforts in assigned projects and tasks.
- Communicate study results and status to enable business decisions.
- Monitor and communicate project status, business issues and significant developments.
- Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews.
- Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and / or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited University or College
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in an engineering position
Desired Characteristics
- Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
- 10+ years of experience in a mechanical engineering, supply chain, sourcing, or manufacturing operations position
- Experience estimating weight, product cost, maintenance cost, and design parameters early in engine development programs
- Experience with Unigraphics NX
- Exposure to compressor or turbine aerodynamics
- Exposure to engine cycle & performance
- Exposure to both military and commercial engine design requirements
- Prior experience leading global cross-functional teams
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
- Ability to guide and influence others
- Demonstrated process orientation in approach to work
- Demonstrated ability to document, plan, market and manage programs that further the knowledge, understanding and capability of the business
- Problem analysis and resolution skills
- Systems level thinking, incorporating understanding of the overall engine to influence mechanical design.
