SUMMARY OF POSITION:
As an integral part of the Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) team, the Occupational Safety Specialist will assume an influencing leadership role, a leadership position for the Technical Rescue Team and spearheads Kimberly-Clark’s (K-C) commitment to Better Care for a Better World.
This role involves supporting and advancing specific aspects of occupational safety initiatives within the mill. Incumbent addresses technical aspects and risks pertinent to occupational safety, ensuring compliance with local, national, and global regulations as well as K-C Performance Standards. Incumbent will be responsible to lead the Technical Rescue Team, inclusive of managing the coordination and facilitation of training for the team, Lead the Fire and Explosion Program, Global Risk Management, and facility inspections. Through effective collaboration, they significantly contribute to the success of the company’s occupational safety initiatives, fostering a culture of workforce protection, well-being, and sustainability throughout the organization. This role will report to the mill EHSS leader.
- Implementation of Strategies: Capable of implementing strategies, objectives, shared commitments, and initiatives specific to the occupational safety field, ensuring comprehensive coverage and effective execution.
- Regulatory Compliance: Familiarity with legal requirements and company occupational safety standards relevant or applicable to the facility. Specifically inclusive of fire code, confined space and working at heights. Prepare and submit federal and provincial mandated health and safety reports.
- Risk Assessment and Compliance Evaluation: Capable of conducting risk assessments and compliance evaluations related to occupational safety regulations, providing accurate insights and recommendations for mitigation.
- Culture of Excellence: Capable of addressing mindset, behavior, and capabilities that impact performance within the organization's occupational safety Maturity Model, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and excellence.
- Stakeholder Communication: Strong communication skills to engage with stakeholders and convey complex information effectively.
- Technical Knowledge: Knowledge of technical topics and management strategies for associated operation-specific risks. Manage oneself applicable certifications to support technical knowledge associated with TRT.
- Coordination and Integration: Aptitude for coordinating activities, initiatives, and information flow among cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and achievement of objectives. – Lead the coordination of the Technical Rescue Team, GRC facility audits.
- Continuous Improvement: Commitment to continuous improvement and staying updated on industry trends and best practices in occupational safety.
- Specialist-Level Expertise: Specialist-level experience in one or more topics related to implementing and/or conducting efforts associated with occupational safety programs, risk assessments, compliance evaluations, incident investigations, and aspects of MBC (mindsets, behaviors, and capabilities) of leaders and the workforce that can impact occupational safety performance. Additional safety technical topics addressed by K-C Occupational Safety Performance Standards and management of associated operation-specific risks.
Essential Accountabilities:
- Collaborate with site EHS Leader, Region/BU and Global OH&S to address occupational safety risk/opportunities related to the individual’s relevant specialty, including:
- Collaborate With Operational Leaders: Collaborate with operational leaders to integrate occupational safety initiatives effectively.
- Adopt And Implement Strategies: Adopt and implement site-specific occupational safety strategies, initiatives, and programs aligned with Regional OH&S and E&S objectives.
- Risk Identification and Mitigation: Supporting the identification of occupational safety potential hazards, assessing risks, and implementing preventative measures to manage/mitigate these risks.
- Compliance and Effectiveness Evaluation: Supporting technical evaluations of the effectiveness of occupational safety systems and processes, with emphasis on ensuring compliance with local and national regulations and relevant Global Performance. Standards.
- Safety Culture Integration: Collaborating with operational leaders to integrate occupation safety initiatives and considerations into the organizational culture.
- Data Analysis and Problem-Solving: Analyze occupational safety data to identify areas for improvement, informing problem-solving processes and recommending effective solutions.
- Effective Communication Channels: Maintain effective communication channels to report occupational safety performance, challenges, and improvements across relevant stakeholders.
- Innovation Advisory: Provide advice on innovative practices relevant to occupational safety subject, recommending advancements and improvements.
- Best Practices Integration: Stay informed about industry and company best practices, integrating them into regional occupational safety efforts and activities to enhance overall performance.
- Safety Culture Leadership: Supporting a positive safety culture by assisting leaders on mindsets and behaviors that prioritize safety (routinely elevating leader and workforce awareness and genuine concern for safety through personal actions and communications). Demonstrate and exemplify our safety culture by role modeling appropriate behaviors.
- Connected Checking and Monitoring: Implement robust processes for ongoing evaluation and monitoring of safety measures, ensuring prompt identification of emerging risks and opportunities for improvement.
- Behavior-Based Observation Program: Establish and oversee a behavior-based observation program to systematically identify unsafe behaviors, address root causes, and reinforce positive safety practices throughout the organization.
- Continuous Monitoring Processes: Establish and maintain processes for continuous monitoring and connected checking of occupational safety performance, ensuring ongoing awareness and improvement.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or college degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene
- 3 plus years of experience working as a safety specialist in a manufacturing environment.
- Specialized expertise in relevant topics such as Occupational Safety, Fire and Explosion, Technical Rescue, or Industrial Hygiene.
- Influencer/Coordinator
- Working knowledge of Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and National Fire Protection Association
- Strong communication, facilitation, collaboration, and influencing skills.
- Ability to organize and lead by influence and foster a proactive team environment.
- Capable of initiating and managing projects in a team setting.
- Ability to occasionally travel for business needs (<5%).
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Safety Certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional), ASP (Associate Safety Professional), etc.
- Experience in a Consumer-Packaged Goods or Industrialized Manufacturing company.
