PhD contract for 3 years, start 01.04.2025
Supervisors: Prof. Dr. med. Angèle Gayet-Ageron and Dr. PhD Joelle Schwarz
The Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM) of Bern performs research in a range of disciplines relevant to public health (www.ispm.unibe.ch')). Groups cut across divisions, facilitating an interdisciplinary approach to research in the fields of clinical epidemiology, social and behavioral health, biostatistics, and international and environmental health. The ISPM is highly reputed for its expertise in health effects of environmental exposures, the spread of infectious disease, and the health of vulnerable groups including children and the elderly.
The Research-on-Research Group, headed by Prof. Dr. med. Angèle Gayet-Ageron, conducts projects in the fields of clinical methodology, research ecosystem (role of gender), and patient and public involvement.
Women have long been underrepresented in clinical trials. The study of differences in research outcomes by sex and/or gender has not been done systematically. These gaps in knowledge partly explain health inequalities, often to the detriment of women. In your PhD project you will investigate if recent interventions promoting sex and gender have improved their integration in research protocols submitted to Swiss Ethics Committees.
You will be part of a dynamic and multidisciplinary team (based in Bern, Lausanne and Geneva) and work closely with researchers, epidemiologists, data managers, other PhD candidates, and members of the seven Swiss Research Ethics Committees. You will gain an in-depth understanding of epidemiological and biostatistical techniques, writing of research protocols, collect and analyse qualitative data, present your results at (inter)national conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
You have
- A university degree (MD, MSc or equivalent) in social sciences, health sciences, biology, medicine, psychology, or related fields
- A strong interest in gender studies and/or public health
- Experience in collection and analysis of qualitative data (MaxQDA or equivalent)
- An interest in biostatistics, ideally with experience in data analysis and statistical software such as Stata or R
- Fluency in French and German, and English
What we offer
- Work in a motivated and competent multidisciplinary research team
- A lively and international graduate school at the University of Bern
- Salary according to the Swiss Science Foundation Salary Scales for PhD candidates (NRP-83 "Gender Medicine and Health")
For further information on the position, please contact Prof. Dr. med. Angèle Gayet-Ageron, Tel. 0041 (0)79 553 46 50 (angele.gayet- E-Mail schreiben).
If you are looking for an exciting position in a highly motivated interdisciplinary team, please send your CV with motivation letter to Angèle Gayet-Ageron (E-Mail schreiben) until February 16th, 2025.
