PostDoc postition - Characterization and multi-physics simulation of 2D and 3D laser metals processing
In our Laboratory for Advanced Materials Processing in Thun, near Bern, we are currently looking for an outstanding candidate to conduct cutting-edge research at the interface of modeling and simulation of laser manufacturing processes (e.g., laser cladding, additive manufacturing) and experimental validation using advanced facilities (high-speed optical and infrared imaging, in-situ synchrotron imaging).
Your tasks
The candidate will study physical phenomena such as internal laser beam reflection, beam trapping in powder streams and powder beds, multi-material dissolution dynamics, keyhole formation, thermo-capillary flow, evaporation-induced recoil pressure, phase transitions (melting, vaporization, solidification), vapor plume formation dynamics, and residual stress analysis. The objective will be to investigate these phenomena using simulation tools and via sophisticated experiments. Besides, the candidate is expected to supervise BSc-/MSc students or semester interns.
Your profile
- PhD in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Technology or similar fields
- Experienced in CFD and FEM simulations using tools such as OpenFOAM (preferably) /COMSOL/ Abaqus etc., with a strong focus on multi-phase modeling of high-energy density heat sources, including laser-material and electron beam-material interactions
- Good programming skills (e.g. Python, Matlab, C++) for developing new simulation frameworks or image processing algorithms
- Experience in or willingness to learn independently operating additive manufacturing systems (DED and LPBF), including CNC programming and CAD software (e.g., Siemens NX) for print job preparation is highly beneficial
- Experimental skills in metallographic sample preparation, with experience or willingness to learn techniques such as SEM, XRD, EBSD, and DSC is a plus
- Excellent writing and communication skills (English) are of great importance, knowledge of German or French would be an advantage
A strong desire to work at the leading edge of materials technology and a high level of motivation to work in an international, multidisciplinary research team in the field of materials processing are essential. The candidate should have a clear interest to work in an application-driven research environment with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment in close-collaboration with our many industrial and academic partners, both in Switzerland and abroad.
Our offer
The full-time position is available immediately or upon agreement and is initially limited to 12 months with the possibility for an extension, depending on the candidate's performance.
We live a culture of inclusion and respect. We welcome all people who are interested in innovative, sustainable and meaningful activities - that's what counts.
We look forward to receiving your complete online application including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas and contact details of two reference persons. Please submit these exclusively via our job portal. Applications by e-mail and by post will not be considered.
