Engineer in Water Supply & Treatment, 60-100%
Project Title: Clara NextGen - Sustainable, in-line, machine learning-driven water disinfection and monitoring system for low-income settings
Duration: One year (17 February 2025 – 16 February 2026) with possibility of extension
Location: Eawag Dübendorf, Switzerland (with international travel)
Access to safe drinking water remains a critical challenge in low-income settings, where conventional water treatment solutions often fail due to cost, complexity, or lack of maintenance. To address this, the Clara NextGen Project aims to develop an innovative, sustainable, and in-line water disinfection and monitoring system. The project is a collaboration between CLARA Water AG , CSEM (Centre Suisse d’Électronique et de Microtechnique), and EAWAG (Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology). The Clara NextGen system uses advanced sensor technologies, machine learning algorithms, and modular designs to ensure efficient chlorination and water quality monitoring in low-income countries under diverse environmental conditions. This role bridges technical expertise and project execution to ensure the Clara NextGen system achieves its intended impact, enhancing access to safe drinking water in underserved communities.
We are seeking a highly motivated individual to contribute to the successful design, development, testing, and implementation of the Clara NextGen system. This includes refining system specifications, assembling and validating prototypes, and generating data to support the integration of advanced sensor technologies and machine learning algorithms. Additionally, the individual will support project management activities to ensure deliverables are met on time and align with the overarching goals of the project, with possibility of supervising a MSc student as part of a thesis project.
The successful candidate will have a combination of following skills and experiences.

The successful candidate will have a combination of following skills and experiences.
Must have:
- Master’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Sciences or a related field
- Understanding of electronics, remote monitoring, sensor integration, fluid mechanics, hydraulic systems, and water treatment technologies
- Ability to work collaboratively with international teams across diverse disciplines and to coordinate activities for multi-stakeholder projects
- Proven skills to manage projects with clear goals and deliverables, progress tracking, reporting, and basic risk management
- Experience with CAD software to draft technical specifications and schematics and to adapt designs based on field feedback and testing outcomes
- Strong communication skills for reporting technical information to diverse audiences
- Fluency in English (written and spoken)
- Advanced degree
- Experience setting up and operating water treatment systems, and conducting experiments in controlled environments and real-world settings
- Familiarity with experimental designs, AI-driven monitoring or machine learning applications in environmental contexts is an advantage
- Knowledge of programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB) and management tools (e.g., MS Project, Trello, or similar)
- Experience coordinating activities with research institutions and/or private sector partners
- Fluency in French or German is an asset
