Kinderspital Zürich is the largest university children's hospital in Switzerland with about 2,500 employees, and is one of the leading centres for paediatric and youth medicine in Europe. Although the hospital may be big, it's the little ones that count: up to 100,000 patients are cared for each year across 47 faculties, where we do everything in our power to ensure their well being. Project background
Inborn errors of metabolism are rare but life-threatening diseases usually presenting in the newborn or childhood period. As part of the Division of Metabolism at the University Children's Hospital, we are the largest European diagnostic centre and the largest Swiss treatment centre for many metabolic diseases The aim of our research is to develop novel diagnostic methods and treatments for these devastating disorders. Over the last 50 years, we have collected a large biobank of patient derived fibroblasts. In the next 2 years, we plan to re-grow this biobank and, together with the Swiss Multi Omic's Center of the ETH Zurich, develop novel multi-omics based diagnostic assays with the potential for rapid clinical translation.
In our previous work, we demonstrated that for a single disease, multi-omics analysis gave a higher diagnostic rate than conventional biochemical or genomics-based diagnosis alone. Now we scale-up this approach by re-evaluating for a number of new diseases. To do so, we will put the patient-derived fibroblasts of our biobank into culture and prepare them for measurement by state-of-the-art genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic methods.

Your responsibilities:
- Efficiently performing cell culture work and preparing the samples for measurement
- Working closely with a senior expert in cell culture for quantitative high-throughput experiments
- Ensuring that your work is diligent, reproducible, and well-documented to guarantee the generation of high-quality samples
- Contributing to the creation of a worldwide unique data resource that will help diagnose children with rare inherited diseases
Your profile
- Holding a Master's degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related field, or having completed education as a lab technician
- Demonstrating a solid background in laboratory work with proven experience
- Being goal-driven, motivated, and a strong team player
- Having hands-on experience with human cell culture
- Bringing experience in high-throughput cell culture and sample preparation for quantitative experiments
- Showing a keen interest in rare diseases and their clinical translation
