Company Description
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.Job Description
IntroductionThe Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Protection Unit (HSE) is looking for a geomechanical engineer in the frame of the Future Circular Collider study to develop together with industrial partners the requirements, architecture and design for a modular excavated materials treatment plant.
Are you a Geomechanical/ Geotechnical Engineer experienced in excavation material treatment and familiar with large-scale construction projects? Join CERN’s Environment Group to contribute with your skills to this study in a highly interdisciplinary and international collaboration project. Take part!
Functions
As a Geomechanical/ Geotechnical Engineer with expertise in soil treatment and/or large-scale subsurface construction projects, you will actively contribute to the study to develop a viable approach for the management of excavated materials.
You will:
- Gather technical requirements for the treatment and processing of excavated materials;
- Work with industrial suppliers from concepts to final design of a modular excavated materials treatment plant, incorporating eco-design principles;
- Lead and manage prototyping activities to build an installation for the treatment and characterization of the excavated materials, in cooperation with experts, suppliers and academic partners worldwide;
- Participate to feasibility tests for excavated material reuse pathways;
- Liaise with the civil engineering team of the FCC study;
- Develop a preliminary management plan of excavated materials depending on the material’s quality and the feasibility of the possible reuse pathways;
- Elaborate the appropriate documentation, from the requirements gathering phase and the strategy definition to the detailed solutions implemented in the excavated materials treatment plant.
Qualifications
Master’s degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Mechanical Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related field.Experience
Demonstrated experience in the following:
- Extensive experience in treatment and processing of excavated materials, especially of mechanical sorting and granulometry reduction methods.
- Solid knowledge of gathering and documenting requirements according to industrial best practices and tools (e.g. ReqSuite, IBM DOORS, Enterprise Architect, Jama, Valispace, Polarian or similar).
- Application of environmental regulations related to the storage, transport and reuse of excavated materials.
- Experience in the application of eco-design principles.
The following experience would be an asset:
- Knowledge of soil pollution remediation methods.
- Knowledge of excavated material traceability systems.
- Knowledge of excavation material characterisation techniques (e.g. Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA), Near infrared (NIR) hyper-spectral analysis or X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and other geotechnical and geo-mechanical characterisation tests).
- Experience in setting up of an excavated material management plan.
- Knowledge of environmental management standards.
Technical competencies:
- Knowledge of Environmental Law: including Waste Management Laws (knowledge of at least one of CERN’s Host states (France/Switzerland) regulations and European regulatory framework).
- Knowledge of underground structure construction: specifically soil and excavated material treatment techniques.
- Basic knowledge in geology.
- Drafting and writing of official documents.
Behavioural competencies:
- Solving Problems: recognizing what is essential; discriminating between important and peripheral information and being able to see the whole picture and adopting a pragmatic approach as well as understanding the value of adopting generic rather than ’gold -plated’ technical solutions
- Managing Self: working well autonomously and taking on activities and tasks without prompting
- Learning and Sharing Knowledge: keeping up-to-date with developments in own field of expertise and readily absorbing new information as well as sharing knowledge and expertise freely and willingly with others and coaching others to ensure knowledge transfer
- Communicating Effectively: expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner and keeping to the point
- Working in Teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team and participating fully and taking an active role in team activities
Language skills:
Spoken and written English or French. Ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts would be an advantage. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages.
