PhD position on multi-constituent nanopastes for sinter-bonding
The Laboratory of Joining Technologies and Corrosion at Empa in Dübendorf drives innovations in joining technologies and corrosion management to enable evolution towards increasingly efficient, reliable and sustainable material technologies.
Joining is a key-enabling technology for advanced manufacturing. In order to address increasingly complex demands on joining (dissimilar materials combinations, miniaturisation, extreme operation conditions, thermal management issues, life-cycle considerations and sustainability,…), nano-micro-joining (NMJ) aims at utilising nanoscale, out-of-equilibrium effects for joining purposes, e.g. to achieve joints with higher operation temperature at lower joining temperature. A major NMJ research effort is the development of nanoparticle pastes (nanopastes) for sinter-bonding. For our research activities in this field, we are looking for a PhD candidate to investigate the feasibility and application potential of multi-constituent nanopastes. This PhD project runs over 4 years, and is offered in collaboration with ETH Zurich.
Your tasks
- Conduct scientific research in the field of nanopastes for sinter-bonding and develop your own profile as a researcher

A broad range of methods and techniques is available at Empa that can be used by yourself or accessed in cooperation with experts (laboratory for nanopaste preparation, joining equipment, XPS/HAXPES, DSC-TG-MS, in-situ XRD, electron microscopy, mechanical testing,…)
- Present your results at international conferences and in scientific publications
- Supervise intern students and semester projects in the framework of your research project
Your profile
- Master degree in Material Science, Nanotechnology, Chemistry, or related fields
- Intrinsic motivation, scientific interest, and good experimental skills
- Interest and ability to work in an international, interdisciplinary team
- Good knowledge of English (oral and written) mandatory, preferably knowledge of German; good communication skills
Our offer
- A highly interdisciplinary and dynamic research environment with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment
- Attractive employment conditions of the ETH Domain
