Job Description
Your responsibilities
In this position you will work in a collaboration between the Radio Frequency (RF) group, responsible for the acceleration and longitudinal control of the particle beams, and the Controls Electronics and Mechatronics (CEM) group, responsible for the development and maintenance of hardware and low-level software of centralized electronics systems.
Within the framework of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) project, fast analog and digital signal processing techniques are being developed to control the electrical field in the accelerating cavities operating in the radio-frequency range (400MHz in the LHC). To enhance the future RF distribution within the CERN accelerator complex, an innovative approach based on Radio Frequency (RF) distribution over White-Rabbit (https://ohwr.org/project/white-rabbit/-/wikis/home) has been developed.
In this position, you will improve the performance of an existing RF White Rabbit-based module, the eRTM15 . You will actively participate in all the phases of the project, from the specification and design, to testing prototypes and overseeing a small series production.
As an Electronics Engineer in the project you will:
- Design, prototype, and test low-noise electronic components, PCBs and systems;
- Develop test setups and conduct full performance characterization of systems;
- Develop automated tests, to be run on real hardware during Continuous Integration (CI);
- Collaborate closely with firmware and software engineers;
- Debug installations in the field, as part of a multidisciplinary team;
- Document hardware designs, testing procedures, and operational guidelines in a structured manner.

About us
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
